Inspiration

Mary was a first-century BC Galilean Jewish woman of Nazareth, and the mother of Jesus, according to the New Testament and the Qur’an. The gospels of Matthew and Luke in the New Testament and the Quran describe Mary as a virgin betrothed to Joseph. This painting is taken from the statue of the Blessed Virgin which stands in an alcove behind the main altar at St. Sulpice in Paris, France. Another common Marian devotional practice is the tradition of depicting Mary standing on top of a snake. This image comes from the book of Genesis, where God says to the snake that tempted Adam and Eve:”And I will put enmity, between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” (Genesis 3:15)
